Orillia Lifesaving Team

Push your limits and build real lifesaving skills with the Orillia Lifesaving Team. This exciting humanitarian sport combines competitive swimming with water rescue techniques in a fast-paced, team-focused environment.

Athletes develop strong swimming ability, rescue skills, and confidence through coached training that includes stroke improvement, rescue drills, and timed challenges.

Open to swimmers aged 7+ who have completed Swimmer 3. Participants can attend tryouts to be placed in Bronze, Silver, or Gold program divisions.

Orillia Lifesaving Team Pool Program

Fundamentals Program

This is a sessional (8-week program) that is a stepping stone to jumpstart into lifesaving sport skills. Participants are not required to try out, and coaches may recommend swimmers to further progress into the Bronze or Silver division. Training: 1 practice per week.

Bronze Division

An introduction to Lifesaving Sport focused on building swimming technique, endurance, and basic lifesaving skills in a fun and supportive environment. Training: 1 practice per week.

Silver Division

For athletes ready to build speed, strength, and technical skills while preparing for competitive lifesaving events. Training: 2 practices per week.

Gold Division

Advanced training for athletes preparing to compete at the provincial level, with a focus on racing skills and technical lifesaving events. Training: 3 practices per week.

High Performance Division

OLT’s highest level for athletes competing at provincial competitions, with demanding training focused on performance and competition readiness. Training: 5 practices per week.

Tryouts

New swimmers must attend a tryout before registering to determine the appropriate division, excluding the fundamentals program.

Minimum requirements:

  • Age 7+
  • Swim 50m continuously using front crawl, back crawl, or breaststroke
  • Comfortable in deep water, including treading and basic diving

Additional skills such as dives, turns, interval swimming, and equipment use may also be assessed.

Competitions

Athletes may participate in competitions throughout the season. Coaches will communicate competition dates.

Orillia Lifesaving Team Waterfront Program

Novice Division

For kids 7-11 years old, this is a great introduction and development to learning lifesaving sport in a waterfront environment. Athletes in this group participate in practices with a Specialized Lifesaving Sport Coach to acquire open water rescue knowledge, skills and fitness goals. Training: 3 practices per week for 1 hour.

Junior Lifeguard Division

For youth 12-16 years old, this is a great stepping stone for those that have completed swimming lessons up to Swimmer 6 or have swam with Orillia Lifesaving Team Silver and Gold divisions. Participants learn and develop new lifesaving and rescue skills through waterfront lifesaving sport disciplines of open water swimming, rescue paddleboarding, beach running and sprinting. Training: 3 practices per week for 1.5 hours.

Tryouts

New swimmers must attend a tryout before registering to determine the appropriate division.

Minimum requirements:

  • Age 7+
  • Swim 50m continuously using front crawl and tread water for one minute in open water
  • Comfort with additional skills such as paddleboarding, open water swimming, and equipment use may also be assessed.
Competitions

Athletes may participate in the Ontario Waterfront Lifesaving Championship in mid May.

All athletes and parents are expected to follow the Orillia Lifesaving Team Parent and Athlete Code of Conduct to support a safe and respectful team environment.
